Itinerary
Eight Days in Slovenia
Inspiration for your next adventure
Ljubljana's riverside cafés, Lake Bled at sunrise, the emerald Soča River and the Adriatic at Piran. Small, green and made for two people who like to move.
Who this is for
Couples who want mountains, water and good food in one easy trip, without long drives or crowds. You like to hike in the morning, swim or raft in the afternoon and eat very well at night.
The shape of the trip
Where you sleep, and the rhythm of the days
Ljubljana, 2 nights · Lake Bled, 2 · Soča Valley, 2 · Piran, 1
Short drives between bases, with one active day in each. The mountains are the center of the trip, and the coast is a slow finish. The splurge is dinner at Hiša Franko, Ana Roš's restaurant in the Soča Valley.
Where to go and what to eat
The places

01 · 2 nights
Ljubljana
A small, walkable capital with a car-free center, a castle on the hill and cafés along the Ljubljanica River. Spend an evening along the riverbank and a morning at the central market.

02 · 2 nights
Lake Bled and Bohinj
Forty minutes north, Lake Bled has a church on an island, reached by traditional wooden boat, and a castle on a cliff above. Walk the lake early, before the day-trippers arrive, and hike to the Ojstrica or Osojnica viewpoints for the famous view. Try the cream cake, kremšnita. Lake Bohinj, half an hour further, is larger, wilder and quieter, and good for a swim.

03 · 2 nights
The Soča Valley
Cross the Vršič Pass, a road of 50 switchbacks through the Julian Alps that is open in the warmer months (check for roadwork closures before you set off), to the Soča Valley, where the river runs an unreal emerald green. Raft or kayak the river from Bovec, walk to the Kozjak waterfall near Kobarid, and have dinner at Hiša Franko.

04 · 1 night
Piran
Finish on Slovenia's short stretch of coast. Piran is a small Venetian town on a peninsula, with a main square that opens onto the harbor. Swim off the rocks, eat grilled fish, and drink a glass of local Malvazija. On the way, stop at the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO site with an underground canyon.
My take on Slovenia
Slovenia is such a genuine hidden treasure - an incredible off-the-beaten-path escape where you can get a little bit of everything without dealing with heavy crowds. Within the span of a single trip, you can scale dramatic alpine peaks, wander through storybook medieval towns, and dip your toes right into the Adriatic Sea.
You can base yourself around the shimmering waters of Lake Bled or the jaw-dropping Soca Valley for world-class hiking alongside those unreal emerald-green rivers, then take an easy drive south to soak up the Venetian-influenced coastal charm of Piran. Along the way, you'll uncover cliffside castles, explore the otherworldly underground depths of Postojna Cave, and sip crisp local wines in a country that feels refreshingly untouched compared to its busier neighbors. It's the kind of place that definitely deserves a proper, unhurried stay rather than just rushing through as a quick day trip from Italy.

My take
Worth it, and what to skip
Worth it
Dinner at Hiša Franko. It is one of Europe's most celebrated restaurants and the reason many people come to the valley. Book months ahead.
Lake Bled at sunrise. It is quiet, and the light on the island is the best of the day.
June or September. The passes are open, rafting season is in full swing and the lakes are calm. The Soča stays bracing all summer, so outfitters provide wetsuits.
Skip it
Bled at midday in August. It is the busiest place in the country, with summer traffic controls on the roads around the lake. Go early or late, park at the central lot and walk.
Driving the Vršič Pass in winter. It closes with snow. Late spring to early fall is the time.
